Electric cars that charge when passing through the asphalt?

The “green mobility” is already a reality with the transfer of dynamic wireless power, the technology that will power electric cars, automobiles, buses and electric commercial vehicles through non-contact dynamic induction charging.

After years of intense and in-depth studies, the “Arena of the Future”, the circuit built by A35 Brebemi With the collaboration of international partners, public institutions and universities, it is now a reality. The first tests carried out in Brescia, Italy, are showing how it is progressing towards an ecological transition in the world of mobility with electric charge with dynamic induction.

In fact, the construction and technical execution of the 1,050-meter-long circuit, powered by a 1 MW power plant, has recently been successfully completed. Starting today, “Arena of the Future” is ready to showcase the innovative technology used in the field. The first vehicles powered by this system have passed kilometers of tests, with very encouraging results.

Electric cars and new charging system

The DWPT system (Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer), used by a group of highly specialized technicians who work for the companies participating in the project, is proving to be the best option to give immediate and concrete answers in terms of decarbonisation and environmental sustainability. This technology will help accelerate the ecological transition by responding to what the world requires in terms of environmental protection.

For Srinivas Siripurapu, Director of Research and Development and Director of Innovation of Prymian Group, the future is here.

Imagine a world with highways where you can charge electric cars while driving. Sounds futuristic? ‘Arena of the Future’ shows that it is possible with its first successful demo and Prysmian is proud to be part of the consortium promoting this advancement in mobility. “

The Prysmian group has developed a new technology for its cables, dubbed P-Laser, and for the first time it has been used in an LVDC (low voltage direct current) application that allows combining high performance with sustainability. For this, the company developed and supplied 10 km of P-Laser LVDC cabling infrastructure that ensures higher efficiency, product circularity and low environmental footprint.

According to those responsible for Arena of the Future, the project has been developed in three phases:

  1. Identify the best technology to achieve road electrification.
  2. Physical development of the circuit.
  3. Verification of the performance levels of the technologies that have been adopted. (Currently in development)

Thanks to DWPT (Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer), electric vehicles can be recharged while traveling on cabled lanes through an innovative loop system placed under the asphalt. This technology can be adapted to all vehicles equipped with a special “receiver” that directly transfers the energy needed to charge and travel, creating the platform for a “zero emissions” mobility system.

Research and Development Manager at Cocesa Prysmian Group, “this system allows the collection of electrical energy while driving by passing through emitter coils integrated into the road, which increases autonomy while on the move and reduces dependence on stations. loading ”. In addition, “vehicles will be connected through 5G and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies, which will guarantee maximum road safety and optimize the productivity of commercial vehicles.”

The road surface has been designed and built to make it more durable without altering the efficiency and effectiveness of inductive charging. In addition, the test will allow partners to carefully evaluate the environmental benefits and economic benefits derived from DWPT and SWPT (or static load, tested for parked or parked vehicles).

“Arena of the Future” is the first example of collaborative innovation for “zero emissions” mobility, and it is ready to start the new testing phases for this technology, which according to TIME magazine is “one of the 100 most important inventions of 2021 “.
